Activists in Taiwan call for peace in Gaza Strip
2010/06/08 18:57:19

Taipei, June 8 (CNA) Over 50 Taiwanese activists Tuesday added their voice to worldwide condemnation of Israel’s alleged violence on the Gaza Strip, demanding Israel stop impeding the international effort to supply humanitarian aid to the region.

Led by the Labor Rights Association, demonstrators gathered in front of the Taipei World Trade Center building, which houses several foreign representative offices, including the Israel Economic and Cultural Office (ISECO).

“What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is systematic murder. Over 70 percent of the people in the Gaza Strip have no food or water and this is all because Israel has refused to allow them to live, ” said Wang Chun-ping, the association’s executive director.

Holding up placards and banners, the protesters shouted “Free Free Palestine” and called Israeli officials “liars” and “killers.”

The group also accused the Taiwanese government and the public of standing idly by while conflicts continue to flare in the war-torn region.

A New Zealand man named Sean Kaiteri said it is ironic that the Jewish people are now oppressing another race when not too long ago they were the victims of persecution.

A minor scuffle with the police erupted when the ISECO refused to accept a petition letter from the protesters. The group was ordered to disperse because the demonstration was in violation of the Assembly and Parade Act, the police said.

“I instructed my people not to go down to meet the protesters because we refuse to be part of a staged demonstration. If the protesters were truly interested in a dialogue, they could make an appointment, ” Israeli Representative Rafael Gamzou told the Central News Agency by telephone.

The Israeli representative categorically denied any disaster, hunger, or human atrocity in the Gaza Strip and asked the world to turn its attention to the Hamas government, which he said is abusing its own people by depriving them of supplies provided by the international community, including Israel.

On May 31, nine Turkish citizens died and several were injured during a raid by Israeli commandos on a Gaza-bound aid ship. The incident sparked international outrage against the Israeli government.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his soldiers acted out of self-defense and that all donated goods will reach the Gaza region after a thorough security inspection by Israeli forces.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a multinational probe into the clash, but was rebuffed by Israel.

Calling the protesters in Taiwan “victims of propaganda” perpetuated by Hamas, Gamzou said the allegations against his country were groundless.

“Where were these self-declared peace lovers and human rights champions when Israeli citizens were being shelled every day by the Hamas? I never once heard them open their mouths in defense of the innocent Israeli people,” Gamzou said.

The representative, however, stressed that many Taiwanese friends have expressed their support for Israel and said the protesters were “in the minority.” (By Jenny W. Hsu)
