The second day of the resumed British show-trial of Julian Assange included powerful witness testimony from Clive Stafford Smith, a US attorney who has represented Guantanamo Bay detainees. He likened US torture tactics exposed by WikiLeaks to those of the Spanish inquisition.
Reporting for the World Socialist Web Site, Laura Tiernan and Thomas Scripps documented the wide-ranging WikiLeaks disclosures that Stafford Smith reviewed.
Smith discussed a US assassination program in Syria, with a “kill list” of 669 names. The list, published by WikiLeaks, showed how the US had targeted American journalist Bilal Abdul Kareem and Al Jazeera’s Ahmad Zaidan… Weapons used to assassinate US targets “were named after porn stars and revealed names clearly from US allies, identifiable to Great Britain or Australia.”
Stafford Smith outlined some of what WikiLeaks helped expose about the criminal US, British wars in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
WikiLeaks publications had also been used in the Chekkouri case, exposing British involvement in the secret rendition and torture of Binyam Mohamed. Interrogators had taken a razor blade to his genitals before rendering him to a “Dark Prison” in Kabul where he was tortured again.
The testimony demonstrated the immense impact of Assange’s journalistic work. Stafford Smith stated that WikiLeaks publications had helped to free innocent prisoners illegally detained at Guantanamo Bay, and had helped galvanise mass opposition to US drone strikes in Pakistan.
The cross-examination of Stafford Smith was a desperate attempt to cover over the significance of his testimony, aided by the court’s restriction of defence witnesses to just half an hour of testimony.
The WSWS will continue to report each day on the legal travesty underway in Britain each day. We appeal to all supporters of democratic rights to share our articles widely on social media and with your friends and colleagues, and to become active in the fight for Assange’s freedom.
The show-trial underway in London is inextricably tied to the turn to authoritarianism by governments internationally, directed against the working class, as well as a resurgence of imperialist militarism. For that reason, we also direct our readers attention to the following crucial articles published today on the WSWS.
