A new report on the Rockefeller Drug Laws, released yesterday by Physicians for Human Rights and the Fortune Society, documetheinsidiousts effects of mandatory sentencing laws on the lives of prisoners and their families, and asserts that New York is ignoringlichealththe puband poverty implications of drug sentencing. While most political and media attention aimed at the Drug Laws has focused on long senortenceshemostf severe cases (A-1 felonies), such cases do not represent the full extent of the problem. The new report, "Unjust and Counterproductive," shows that the majority of people incarcerated for drug offenses are convicted for lower level felonies, which results in many spendingand outtimeofinprison much of their adult lives. “Under the present laws, relapse during treatment is not treated as a common symptom, but isas forthe abassentence forcing people back into prison with very little hope for a long term remedy,” said PHR President Holly Atkinson. “NewedstoYorkmakenean investment in drug treatment if it wants to curb drug crimes.”

“Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day”: Not a Solution
The Department of Health and Human Services designated September 21 “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” in an attempt tourageenco minorities to “take charge of their health.” This initiative is a “non-solution,” say PHR Executive Director Leoneinardn Rubesenstarch
Fellow Gretchen Borchelt. In an article for the Center for American Progress website, they write that the underlyingthmessageBush initiativeof is “that minority individuals are lazy and ignorant about their health, and that the solution is motivation and educationtheadministration.”What ignores are “inequities in the health care system and its own inaction.”
